THE SENIORS SECTION
Introduction
Welcome to the Seniors Section at Romanby Golf Club, a well-established section within the club. The Seniors section is open to all male golf members aged 55 years and over. The section has a very active membership with a wide age and handicap range. New Senior members are always welcome to what is a very active and sociable section. Any new member without a current handicap will be assisted in obtaining a WHS handicap.
Information
The section is managed and administered by a small, elected committee on behalf of the section members; committee details are available on the Seniors Section Noticeboard located in the Gents Locker Room. The noticeboard also displays the following: List of Events (Competitions, Matches, Away Days, Socials), Sign-Up Sheets for certain Forthcoming Events, Start Sheets for Imminent Events and Results of Recent Events. Furthermore, section information is communicated through the Club Diary, email and a Romanby Seniors Facebook page.
Competitions
Competition Days are generally held on a Thursday, virtually every week throughout the year, weather permitting, and are open to all Seniors with a current WHS handicap. These include not only Individual Medal and Stableford Rounds but also Pairs and Team Events. Entry for competitions can be made using the BRS Golf – Tee Booking System with a draw taking place by the Competitions Secretary who publishes playing partners on a Start sheet and also through BRS. Any requests for alterations to the draw must be submitted to the Competitions Secretary so the appropriate changes can be coordinated.
Summer Competitions
- Summer Stableford – played off the Yellow Tees over 7 rounds. Players may enter all of these rounds with the winner of the event being the player with the best 5 round aggregate points score.
- Malcolm Raby Trophy – is a Medal Eclectic competition played off the Yellow Tees. There are a possible 9 rounds to be played with each of the individual rounds played off 95% Course Playing Handicap. The final Eclectic Score for each and every player is decided by the sum of his best gross score for each hole of his first 6 rounds less an adjustment of 85% of his Course Playing Handicap as of August 1st (as agreed AGM 2022) This will then give the final scores for the Eclectic Competition and the overall winner of the Malcolm Raby Trophy.
- Seniors’ Cup – Stableford Competition played off White Tee’s over 18 holes.
- Fred Tyerman Trophy – A 36-hole medal competition played off White Tee’s on the Tuesday and Thursday of the same week.
- Summer Knockout – A drawn event with the number of rounds decided by the number of entries. Individual Matchplay off Yellow Tee’
- Wyder Cup – This charity event is a Round Robin Team event whereby 4 Teams (Celts, Tykes, RON’s and SOD’s) play Singles and Pairs Match Play games to decide the Winners of the Cup. All entry fees are collected and donated to the Club Captains’ Charity of the Year. A putting Competition is also held on the day to raise more funds for the charity.
Winter Competitions
- Winter Stableford – played off Blue Tees. 5 rounds of Stableford available to be played with the winner being decided by the highest aggregate of their best 3 rounds.
- Winter Knockout – A drawn event with the number of rounds decided by the number of entries. Individual Matchplay off Blue Tees.
Friendly Matches
On Tuesdays through the Summer months the section plays friendly matches against 10 other local clubs both home and away. The teams meet for introductions and coffee , the matches are then played in a 4 Ball Better Ball format with all players having a post match meal and social. This is a great way to enjoy playing other courses at a reduced rate and there is no league table to worry about.
Miscellaneous
Throughout the whole year when there are no formal matches or events taking place the programme also delivers many Team/Pairs/Individual games that are all detailed in the Club Diary including but not limited to;
Texas Scramble
Yellow Peril
The Waltz
Arizona Shuffle
Greensomes
Foursomes
Australian Stableford
Whilst some of these formats are well known and have their details laid down, some are particular to Romanby Seniors. Those particular to Romanby are well established and the details and formats are detailed on Competition Start sheets.
Senior Captains Away Day
The Senior Captains Away Day will be held on 2nd July 2024 at Barnard Castle Golf Club. The day consists of: meet for coffee and bacon roll, 18 holes of golf, post match meal and prizes. All section members are encouraged to support this event which will raise money for charity.
Other events
There are many other events that your section committee will organise on your behalf (scheduled and ad-hoc) which are too numerous to mention, but will include matches against the Ladies Section, a Summer Lunch/BBQ, a Christmas Lunch and various away days and overnight trips for those who wish to spread their golfing wings further afield. We believe that we can offer something for all Senior Golfers, regardless of your age and ability, and if you haven’t met us yet, please get in touch. We look forward to meeting you.
