Seniors

The Senior’s Section is open to all male golfers aged 55 years and over. The section has a very active membership with a wide age and handicap range. New Senior members are always made to feel extremely welcome, to what is a very active and sociable section. Any new member joining without a current handicap will be helped to obtain their World Handicap System (WHS) Handicap Index.

Handicap

The section is managed and administered by a small committee on behalf of the section members. Our aim is ‘to offer you (the Senior’s Section members) a structured golf programme for all, year round’.

Stay informed

The committee details are displayed on the Senior’s Section Noticeboard which can be found in the clubhouse Gentleman’s locker room.

The section noticeboard also displays the following information:

  • A Forecast of Events (FOE) including details of competitions, matches, away days and socials throughout the year
  • Sign-up sheets for forthcoming events
  • Match (tee time) sheets for imminent events
  • Results of recently completed events.

Most of this information can also be found in the club diary. Additionally, a section Senior’s Facebook (FB) page has also been created where information is published for seniors who have subscribed to this closed FB group.

Competitions

Section Competition Days are predominantly held on Thursdays, virtually every week throughout the year (weather permitting). These are open to all Senior’s with a current WHS handicap and include not only Individual Medal and Stableford rounds but also pairs and team events. Entry is via the sign-up sheets mentioned above, with a draw taking place to determine playing partners and an order of play, which is then published on the match sheet.

The Booking and Reference System (BRS) golfing application will also reflect the players and their tee times. Most of the competitions are played from the course Yellow Tees, however the Senior’s Cup and the Fred Tyreman Trophy are played off the White (Competition) Tee’s; these are Individual ‘Medal;’ competitions of 1 or 2 rounds respectively.

Friendly matches

On Tuesdays throughout the Summer months the section enjoys a series of friendly matches against 10 (currently) other local clubs, both home and away. The teams meet for introductions and coffee beforehand, and the match format played is 4 Ball Better Ball. On completion of the matches both teams retire to the clubhouse to enjoy a drink and a meal. This is a great way to enjoy playing other courses at a reduced rate and being a relaxed friendly match, there is no league table to worry about (no pressure!) – simply enjoy the experience and the company (though play to win!).

Winter

Throughout the Winter, Tuesdays are less organised due to less certain playing conditions, and generally they’re free play events, however a Winter Matchplay Knockout competition is organised by the committee, which members may enter (sign-up via the sheets on the noticeboard as previously mentioned). Free play events are usually a ‘roll-up’ at first light game, with balls being drawn from a hat to determine playing partners and a play order. Again, these are purely friendly, sociable games, to keep the swing going through the closed season.

Captain’s Away Day

Each year the Section Captain will organise a Captain’s Away Day. This is usually held in early August (see the FOE or club diary) with a venue being selected by the current Captain, which is within a reasonable travelling distance. Away days usually consist of pre-match coffee and a breakfast roll, 18 holes of golf, and a post-match meal followed by prize giving – great fun!

Other events

There are many other events that your section committee will organise on your behalf (scheduled and ad-hoc) which are too numerous to mention, but will include matches against the Ladies Section, a Summer Lunch/BBQ, a Christmas Lunch and various away days and overnight trips for those who wish to spread their golfing wings further afield. We believe that we can offer something for all Senior Golfers, regardless of your age and ability, and if you haven’t met us yet, please get in touch. We look forward to meeting you.
